I'm going to use sand this year on top of a sheet of foam board. What is the best type sand to use that Lowes or Home Depot sales? Thanks to all & have a great season!

Silica sand, which is used for pool filters, that sand is incredible. If there is any moisture, it disappears quickly.

Get natural sand (beach or river) as opposed to sand made from ground up rocks, which is sharper and more likely to injure the skin.

I've been using Play Sand which is supposed to be "clean". The problem I've had with it is that once it gets wet then dries out, it gets hard and crusty. I doubt it's serving the intended purpose, which is to prevent damage to the pumpkin as it grows across whatever substrate you have it on. This year, I'm going to fill a wheel barrel full of it then rinse it until all of the finer particles are gone and the water is clear. Maybe that will prevent it from crusting and getting so hard and abrasive. How much sand are people putting down per pumpkin?
