Lots of people starting early this year. I'm a bit jealous, since my patch is flooded and an April 10 start date is looking a bit tenuous.

Not that I wanted to start so early. I started April 1 last year and got pollinations 13+ feet out around May 20. I'm just concerned since I don't know when it'll dry out

I feel your pain. I've been tilling on April 1, but its to wet now and it looks like rain on and off for the next 10 days. I think I'm going to have to tarp my planting spots to keep them dry so I can till someday. I'll be starting seeds indoors next weekend. When's your weight off out there?

One is September 23, but the other two are around october 7,9, so plenty of time. My goal this year is to take one to the scales this time, and if it's big that'll be a bonus lol

C2K is correct, thats a real limiting factor at least here in the Pacific Northwest. Generally you can get a blossom two months afer sowing so adding two months to the start date should give an approximate pollination date. It might be a little less for some growers, or a little more, depending if temps are optimal.

Yep what Cindy says.Early start needs continuous warm soil or youll actually hurt yourself. The plants need continuous good conditions or theyll loose their momentum.

For true outside growers (no greenhouse), in the ground too early can backfire with stagnant plants in April since the temps can be variable. Transplant shock lasts longer, and spring storms wreak havoc on them here at a tiny size.

This excludes the deep south and parts of the southwest growers... they get the green light.

Thanks Gritty. Not many growers down there, but they can definitely get an early start especially once south of the panhandle (redneck riviera).
