I saw that today! Looks like a great little project and am glad to see the 2907 is getting the clone treatment!

As to the best of my knowledge this is the first time anyone has used tissue culture on an AG. (I assume that is what is meant by Ian calling it "micro propagation" ). Cloning via tissue culture could be a whole lot better than the common way of "cloning" (through cuttings) . The lab will be able to rid the pumpkin plant of any viruses or any other problems that it could have picked up along the way. Will it be as good as a seedling? I will be interested in seeing if it competes with Ian and Stu's seedling grown plants.

When a plant is asexually propagated it keeps some unexpected traits form the parent plant. Maturity is one of those properties. Will tissue culture give it some of the benefits of the enhanced growth of a juvenile plant ( something like seedling vigor? ) In a straight cutting the plant is basically the exact age of the plant it was taken from. In the nursery trade it is crucial to be aware of the material you are cutting as it can make a huge difference in what it's performance will be like as a full grown plant or if it will grow any roots at all. For example a cutting of English ivy that is taken from a plant with "adult" leaves will retain those adult leaves after rooting. (if a propagator can even get it to grow roots, however the juvenile leaved ivy plants root readily) or...say you are taking a cutting from a Yew (taxus) a cutting taken from a shoot that is growing horizontally is likely to grow horizontally after rooting. A cutting take from a vertical shoot is likely to grow vertically. https://propg.ifas.ufl.edu/03-genetic-selection/17-genetic-phasechange.html

Is incredible. Advise Stewie in August 2022, to make a clone of that plant. I really asked for it for myself... But since they only had one, I ran out of the clone of that plant, and it is not easy to send a clone from England to Spain, since the border is very screwed up. What they are doing is really brilliant, I hope that having 12 plants, they do the following, and that is to put at least 4 clones in each space, two in front of the other two, the best 4 in a pot and leave the one that is really magnificent in soil. Even, a very good idea, is to leave one as a pollinator in a pot, and pollinating this year, with the plant that has reached 2907 pounds, can give them genetics with incredible potential. Only they can do it.

If I lived in England, surely at the end of May, I would be in the greenhouse of the Paton brothers to collect male flowers of these plants.

I like the idea of four in each spot, To evaluate which one is strongest.

They should grow one full sized to see what they can get from that cutting and self it. also they should grow around six 2365 wolfs and use the 1885 clone as pollinator.

As far as we know, there's only one plant that has a proven potential to hit 3k, and it sounds like the next step will be overnight shipping on flowers set to open the next day. $$$ or luck, one way or the other!

Thank you all for the kind comments and excellent information. For us the 2907 is one pumpkin that deserved to make it to a proper weigh off. Moving forward, the genetics are clearly very important. After three hours talking to Jo I realised how involved tissue culture or micro culture is. Jo has kept the plant and this may well become a two year project but that’s pushing boundaries for you. Heatstroke. I really don’t understand your comments. Fortunately your post has very quickly turned into a very positive grownup discussion. Ian

Sorry I clean forgot to answer a question. We would like to end up with a patch of 1885’s, 2365’s, 1940’s and 2907 clones.

ian, this year you are the ones who keep clones.. but next winter is going to be fun, if you get something really big with those clones, many growers will keep clones in their houses next winter, it will be the winter of clones I'll try it for sure. :)
