The 1989.5 I think that cross would have amazing potential. Puts a whole lot of heavy into the 1885. The 1989.5 had 14” walls in the blossom end! Imagine that thickness with the OTT of the 2907!

I am crossing mine with the 2147 (2183 x2365)..plus I am going start 2 weeks earlier then I ever have , march 14 th will be germination day for me , average nite time low doesn't hit 33 degrees F, until april 23.. so what can go wrong..lol

Just about any 1885 cross can be good, but I would advise something heavy, since the main problem with the 1885 is splitting. 1625 Gantner progeny, 2030, 1747 Handy, 2195 Theil, etc etc. Doesn't even have to be super heavy, anything that is solid is a good option.

If you are growing an 1885, I would highly suggest taking cuttings from it. Imagine what we could do if we could keep these plants going, especially the ones that produced really big pumpkins.

I'm not sure at all as I'm enjoying the year off,, but reading Dale's post about starting 2 weeks sooner this year excites me! 2 weeks earlier for a person living where you do is going to be a challenge! You're just the person to do it!!
Looking really forward to watching your progress this year Dale and I know how hard you'll be working to warm things up, clean up snow and get that greenhouse ready that early!:)

So many 1885, 2365 crosses out there now. I think Grittys seeing the possibility of leaving some good genes in the dust which really limits enough selection options in the gene pool for future use, i.e. if everyone is crossing 1885 and 2365 stock the result could be capping a size increase instead of climbing the ladder. Of course that's just biology/genetics theory and having said it: I'd go with the 2554 Andruz - 15% over chart - LOL

I think if it had stayed on the vine longer the 2907 would have been heavier to chart and over 3k. Good ideas here the only other idea I can think of would be to cross it back into a much older "breeder" seed like a 1625 Gantner. Just wish there was clone material from the 2907 to play with, possibly isolating those genetics might have jumped things forward a year or two.
