Unless something drastic happens I think it is pretty much a given that the 2365 Wolf is the right pick. Only 2 people picked it. Will it remain the pick or will something like the 1707(example) get more heavily planted and get hot.

I do like Pete’s 1707.5 both parents were selfed seeds.

As Ken says, the important thing is who chose it, and what seed you got... There are very good growers who have grown 1885, and have not even reached 1800 pounds with an 1885... or many who grew 2183 and they did not reach 1800... although 18 got more than 2000. And many who grew 2145 Mcmullen, and did not reach 1800... good growers. If you look at the statistics you will see it. There are also those who grow 2365, and only got 1800 (dale marshall).. or Andy wolf with a 2365 got 2493 and with another 2006. I think that the seeds of a pumpkin, there are a % that are golden seeds, another % of silver, another % of bronze, and there is also a % that is shit... You have to be lucky when choosing the seed, that's why it is very important, to see what they do in the pot, see what they do in the first 15 days soil, and that is why the Bacups are very important... 3 or 4 bacups per hole. You have to enter the auctions and get good seeds. And the same with pollinators, you have to have several in pots, to see which ones get more wall in the small pumpkins, and which plants are more vigorous.

It was just a lucky pick on my part. The genetics are great and so is the grower. Give yourself the best odds you can. Ruben is right, not all seeds from a given pumpkin perform the same. The number of variables is staggering. By starting with great genetic potential and sound gardening practices, you too could grow a WR.

The 1707 is interesting. Whether it was a super seed, or Pete just grew the heck out of it last year, will be determined this year. I think its pretty promising. My theory is that, as Tanner mentioned, taking two massive selfed/sibbed pumpkins (2552 and 2200 wolf) and outcrossing them is a good idea. The 2552 and 2200 might not have grown the biggest fruit, but I think the genetics that made those big fruit are still there, and just need to be unlocked with an out cross between the two. We were discussing this on an earlier thread about sibbing vs selfing.

I think selfing a great plant can sometimes result in a less than performant seed, that still has the great genetics that grew the original pumpkin locked away and honed because of the self cross.

Well, I picked the 2517 Mendi - BUT, if you would have read my intentionally facetious article in the Spring edition of the News letter I clearly listed the 2365 as a very high scorer using my not so wacky point system of picking seeds. So I'm claiming some bragging rights here. :) I guess its important to know when I submitted the article vs when I posted on here. I didn't look :)

OK - I looked it up. My Mendi post was 3/7/22. My article was submitted 3/22/22. So, I changed my mind after I scored the 2365. (I think)
