How many giant pumpkin plants would you plant in a 3600 sq foot area? Goal for pumpkins weight 1000lbs and up. Thanks for your thoughts

Personally if that was the space I was working with for pumpkins, I would probably plant 4. But what you'll want to do will be different based on a lot of different circumstances. More plants is more work, so maybe you only want to do 3 1200sf plants, or 3 800-1000sf plants with change for walkways, or if one of your plants is growing especially fast and you want to allocate it more room. Or you could do 6 600sf plants. That would be a lot of work, but if you want to finish the season with 4 or maybe 5 pumpkins, and you don't mind a ton of work, then that would be a good bet.

My advice if you're new is start small, if you want to use 3600sf, then 3 plants, don't worry too much about getting them massive, 600 sf per plant is plenty, and if you want to let them grow bigger you always have more room.

WR Cutrupi grown in 860 SF in 2021. 2551 Mendi grown in 850 SF in 2020. If they moved to your patch I'm guessing they would have 4 plants.

I'd say stick to just 3 with the best management possible.

I would grow just two plants, a full size plant and a 150 sq ft pollinator. 3600 ft would be too much work for me!

Plant what you feel you can maintain properly for good growth. Jim

The real question is what can you manage. Without help, three plants is plenty to manage in that space and leave yourself some room to move around. Your odds of getting a big one are probably not much better growing 4 that you cant keep up with than 3 you can maintain well. Not to mention the additional time and cost. Hard work, diligence, and tenacity is what it takes. Even then, bad things can happen. I think Gritty has the right idea - plant one big one and one small, rest, and drink some ice tea.

I guess I should admit I'm growing 4 this year in 4,664 sf. :)

Sounds like no sulfer for your vine ends Garwolf :) I'm not using a tractor and I dont have the money to update my all of my irrigation.

Grow as many plants as you can just be aware the pumpkin sizes will go down if you run out of time to bury vines and deal with weeds, etc. As for patch sizes the 2624.6 wasnt a huge plant either, was it?

If you want to grow long term grow two plants 800 square feet each .Learn how to grow biologically and grow cover crops in the other two plots. We started this method 5 years ago and our weights have gone up ever since breaking the two thousand mark this year with 2006.5 lbs.
