A while back, for a few years in a row, I attempted growing giant pumpkins. I got multiple seeds from the great members on this board. Each year tragedy struck. When the neighbor's cow got loose and trampled my plants, I stopped trying....until last year. I dug into my old seeds and grew 2. I let them grow jungle style. One seed was from a 900+ pound pumpkin. That plant looked more like a regular field pumpkin plant, and it had no female flowers and no fruit. The leaves were small and it was not giant. I don't know if it was because the seed was so old or if it was some weird genetic throwback. The second plant was a Berard 575(1420 Larue X 1370 Rose) from 2005. Yes, it was a very old seed. That plant was a beast! I let the plant go wild and have multiple fruits. The largest taped at about 350 pounds. There was a 250 pounder, multiple 200 pounders and multiple 100 pounders.

Here is my difficult decision. I really have only enough room to do one plant properly. I have started a seed from my 350 pounder another Berard 575 seed. Which one should I grow. My pollination last year was open. The small plant could have been the pollinator.

I plan on only allowing one fruit on the plant to get a giant this year. What are your opinions? FYI - I have a big Tupperware full of vintage seeds that great people sent me.

Also, if anybody has any fresh seeds they would like to part with, I would give it a try.

Hi Horsejody - I dont know which seed you should grow between the 350 and the 575. You said the 575 was aggressive so maybe that one. If you want seeds with current genetics let me know and i will send you my line up. I have seeds from my 1918, 1481, & 1338 that i can mail you. my email [email protected]
