Are these a thing of the past? Nobody seems to have them anymore since weights went over the 1 ton mark.

The GPC looked into it many years ago with a tape that would have been in the 10 meter range or 33' with inches on 1 side & metric on the other. They would have been in a weather proof wind up case with fiberglass tape.

Issues were getting the inches consecutive instead of repeating every foot & same with CM. Next you had to buy 5K or more because of the custom tape. This made the cost well over the budget limit by driving the investment well over 10K USD.

We recognized the need many years ago & the new tape would be a hot commodity. The main issue is till someone with a good sponsor that can lay out that kind of money on a long term investment a new tape is a just a dream.

Harborfreight doesn't ship to Canada, but I found one at Canadian Tire, 100 foot reel tape on sale 16.99, 39% off.

I unwound a 300 ft one and cut of around 80 ft off from the end, then rewound the remainder back on.

I use a 12' tape that I got at the Walmart fabric department. when the pumpkin gets too big I tape a length of baler twine on the end. I just put my thumb on the twine where it meets the other end of the tape, measure the length of twine and add that to 144". It might not be real accurate, but the measurements are just an estimate anyway.
