I purchased a fresh 5 lb bag last spring, and still have 3 lbs left---sealed the bag tightly and stored in a cool, dark
closet---will this still be good to use for this year?

I believe a certain percentage dies off each year, it's not sudden death, so yes it should be good but you may want to add more per sqft than you usually do.

I don't know what time you want to plant, but you could always grow some test plants if you still have time. But I'm with baitman, just add a little more. Some will still be active

There was a test posted to the net somewhere that that showed the death rate like 15% lost in the first year ,another 20% the next etc, it would depend on storage too.

Here are a few quotes , but shelf life could be at 50% ?

shelf life of Agbio-Endos/Ectos can be years in some cases, but always at least two years. ...... Dry formulations of
mycorrhizae have a typical shelf life of 16-18 months although two years is not uncommon. ...........

What is the Shelf Life of MYCORMAX?
Remains effective for eighteen (18) months when properly stored in a cool, dry place without direct sunlight.

Numerous things can kill or reduce the viability of fungal propagules. VAM fungi in particular are much more sensitive to ambient storage conditions than ectomycorrhizal fungi spores. You need to avoid excessive heat and prolonged freezing conditions. Also, light exposure, especially sunlight can kill VAM fungi propagules.

I was told a few years ago to put what I don't use in the freezer for the following year. I take what I get, and divide it in half so I can freeze half of it. Not sure if it is the best to do it is just how I was told to store it for the following year.
