I have almost no nitrogen in the patch. I dont plan to plant until april. I also have alkalign soil. I added about 2 inches of manure. How much amounium nitrate should I add for 400 square feet?

I would continue with the organic principles and not add any nitrate in that form. Try looking into Garden's Alive, the Fertrell Co. web site or your local garden centers for organic based low number 5-3-2 fertilizers. I just picked a couple of low numbers. It could just as well b e 2-2-1. This type will not flush out of your soil, will release your nitrogen all summer as needed and support your manure additions.

....Then foliar feed fish, kelp and molasses while you get ready to add even more manures and leaves or compost parts to better your patch for a cover crop into 2005.

...Get a copy of the paperback book: Dear Dirt Doctor, Howard Garrettt, Texas University Press, Barnes and Noble, Amazon.com and other sources at under $20.00. It is full of help showing the way to build stronger, healthier ballenced living soil. It is written so all can understand the basics.
