the only compost I can find is wood chip. it is completely broke down. Would this be ok to use?

Probably OK. Wood is still plant material, organic matter. It does need a nitrogen source to "cook" so I'm sure its not 100% wood. I just got 4500# of Cedar Rapids compost, and it has high percentage of wood. Their compost is tested and certified, and a very good source of calcium.
