Im mixing half & half seed potting mix with dirt from patch,Will start plants in 1 gallon pots(dont like transplanting)I will put seed stater in top 3 or 4 inchs of pot.Should I use root shield in bottom mix!I have disease issues in patch!How much to use??Any Experts advice would help!!I will warm pots for 2 days prior to start.

hows this pot do when planting like that? you ever have it fall apart/you done this before why add disease known dirt to seed start pot tiny seedling needs clean or sterile stuff when little my opinion anyway

Some people do this so plant will take off faster when planted.It gets acclimated to soil,I should either sterilize my soil,or just plant without soil,I should just go from 4 inch pot right to mini Hut,with Root shield in soil,I dont like transplanting a bunch of times.I was only going to put seed starter around seed like a fist size ball,I think this would stay together,once roots grow into soil mix.Need a warmer spring!!Oh well could be worse!

You should use soilless mix in a gallon pot and only transplant once to the garden.

I have to agree, soilless medium in your starting pots, I use a bigger pot and only transplant once, just like Croley Bend posted.

mossyoak, I am not sure if any "direct" responses have been given to the original question. The original ? was answered w/don't use diseased patch soil in starting mix!! and I agree!! I think awl responses were to HHG's use of patch soil in the starting pots. Save Root Shield, for when planting into patch! I guess!!!? Peace, Wayne

I dont know about when to use Rootshield, I have seen somewhere, they put some in the pot, but not sure. I would like to know when to use Rootshield??? In the pot, when you transplant, before companion, before actinovate???

According to directions, you can add it to the pot, outside soil, or both.

Sorry, havent been browsing boards in a bit.
Although you can put it in the pots, I think that Rootshield used in the pots may be a waste since we usually use a sterile seed starting medium that should be free of any disease.
I will recommend it to anyone that is using patch soil to start their seeds (yes there are growers that still do this).
As I posted in a previous post regarding Rootshield and Actinovate, if using Water soluble Rootshield to pretreat the patch along with Actinovate, use Actinovate first, theen Rootshield WP. If using Granular Rootshield and Actinovate, pretreat the patch with Actinovate and apply the Rootshield Granules as necessary in the transplant hole and when burying vines.
If you have experienced alot of disease issues, I would absolutely treat the whole patch with Rootshield, Actinovate and Companion. Products like Bionutrients also contain Bacillus subtilis GB03, the same bacterium that is known as Companion, applied to your soil as a pretreatment combats disease pathogens though multiple modes of action.
It quickly colonizes a plant's root hairs and literally crowds out disease producing microbes in the soil.
Being Proactive will be the key to prevention.

If you are going to treat the entire patch, you can broadcast the granules over the patch and work them into the soil, the alternative would be using the Rootshield WP and spraying it over the patch.
If your soil has been disease free and you are being proactive, I would apply to planting area and a 2-3 ft circle around it, the roots will grow into it fast.
Then use when burying like you use mycorrhiza.

only add stuff at time of planting in the ground........i never add anything to soilless or soak seeds in anything other than water
