Is it better to add say jersey green sand to the patch, in the fall prep or spring prep, or both. and is there any benifit to adding Bone meal, Blood meal in the fall prep, or will it leach out over the winter.. thanks for the replys ,Bill

Greensand is a slow-release of elements from an iron-potassium silicate mineral. There would be nothing wrong to introduce some in the fall and then again in the spring. I applied some around the base of my 11-yr.old tart red cherry tree in the early days of March and had the most productive cherry harvest of all the 11 harvests.

Bone meal is also slow to break-down and does so all the better when the pH is closest to 7. Put it down in fall. Blood meal is a rather quick N-release so it will benefit a plant that is ramping-up to "make green".....clearly something NOT going on during the winter months. Wait till spring on that one.

This fall.....add plenty of chopped up tree leaves, aged manures and good compost !
