nOVA sCOTIA

My soil test came back showing boron levels of 5.17 ppm.From what i understand levels greater than 1.5 ppm can become toxic to plants.What,if anything can be used to lower boron levels.Thanks.

mix in a very bland material sand or old old compost--like adding water to salty soup to cut it

Hi wayne.I hope we get some feedback also.The growing season is not so far away and some of my questions end up with no answers.I guess I'll have to grow a world record!!

Craig's got it. Some elements can be drafted down with sacrificial cropping but not Boron. Dilute it with lots of well aged compost.

Once you've added the sand don't forget to water the heck out of it.

Leaching of Boron
Boron is readily leachable in sandy textured soils.

Boron soil nutrition is influenced by many factors. The most important are soil texture, organic matter content, and pH. Available boron is readily leached out of the soil by excessive rainfall or irrigation. This is especially true of course-textured (sandy) soils. Because less leaching occurs in fine-textured soils, silt and clay soils are not usually as boron deficient as are sandy soils.

The lower the pH the more toxic the Boron... It is lowering the pH that will let it leach. Boron can exist in soils at levels far greater than this with no toxicity problems as long as the pH is on the basic side. You will often see soils with high Boron levels also with high pH.
