I remember reading somewhere, to take a small cup of your soil and pour vinegar into it. If you have free lime, the soil sample will "fizz". My area is known for this, so tonight it occurred to me to give it a try. Well...
It fizzed and foamed and bubbled. When it was done it had a "head" on it like a root beer float. I thought I had free lime in my soil, but this was a little discouraging to say the least.

I tested my sister's soil as well, same result. If anyone has tried this or would like to try it, please report in here. Thanks.
I've found that when my 2nd grader wants to make a volcano for the school science fair, I can save the baking soda and just use my garden soil. Sigh.
