So I'm planning to send in my soil samples to Western Labs for testing. The thing I don't know is whether to go ahead and get the soil solution from them or not. Will I be able to determine what to do just from the standard test?

Get the standard lets see where you are at first, the other test is a little more involved, its your $$ but If you want to do the other test wait till planting, mid, or late season for that, thats my two cents.

Be like yer at a fast food restaurant - go medium or large and have no regrets (little paper bags of fries and the burger is off-center, lol). I am one to talk, lol- and now I'm hungry.
See? later - eric g

@EVandy yeah I that's the thing to do. There are spreadsheet tools I have access to that might be just as helpful.

Soil solution is probably a bit much to be doing if you're a new grower. It tells you what's available in the soil for the plant right now, taking into consideration several different factors. It won't be that useful to you right now, because those factors can change in the next 2 months. If you want to get really technical and test everything, I think the best time to take a soil solution test would be around planting time up until about pollination. At that point it would be better to take a tissue sample, since this is more informative of what the plant is actually taking up, and is less harmful to the plant at this point (you don't want to be taking several leaf samples when the 4th true leaf is coming out!)

@pg3Ashton if you run a side by side competition at the start, that's something the culled plant could be used for, possibly...
