I am curious how deep you all till? I know the root ball can be pretty big and deep but the vines themselves they are not as extensive. Do you till your patch equally or dig one area deeper knowing the root ball will go there etc.?

I have had several soil scientist tell me our tilling is actually detrimental to our soil structure. We should be depending more on cover crops, and surface applications. With this in mind I till 12-18" deep once in the spring and only shallow till 1-2" after that

Tilling gets you down 4 to 8 inches max. Its fluffs up and raises your dirt height some.A broadfork will get you down that magic 12" plus depth where most of your roots will reside. You may want to raise your planting area up for good drainage vs just tilling deeper there.Main crown root system will often go 20 ft plus radius.

Shannon, curious what kid of equipment you use to cultivate down 12-18”?

I’ve never seen tines on any equipment more than 8-10” so super interested how you can cultivate so deep.
