How does everyone go about pruning the tertiary vines. I have been cutting them off when only a couple inches long right at the time I bury the node. Got to thinking that this is a great way to introduce pathogens. I experimented on a couple nodes where I just covered up the tertiary when burying the node. I have been watching, and it does not appear that they have continued growing and I have seen none emerge out of the soil ball. Seems to be a much better system if they don't all of a sudden all start to come out late in the grow. How and when do you prune your tertiaries?

You can prune them in the grow tip when they are very small. This will leave a smaller wound and should be healed over before you bury the vines

I'll pinch them off or clip them with a sharp scissors or pocket knife and let them scar over for a day before burying.If you dont prune the node it will grow later in the season and youll wish you had.

I just pinch them off (along with the tendril and flower - when flowers no longer needed).

Yes, the tertiary will grow and pop up out of the soil if you bury them, creating a super mess of tertiary vines afterwards.

I let flowers grow on the main, and first 4 secondaries on each side, but preemptively pinch off all other in-needed growth after that in preparation for the big push in July, August, September.

I like to let them get about 4-5 ft long or soooo....then grab ahold of that sucker and snap them off...like I’m crAcKin a whip....yank with all yer might

The smaller the wound, the less issues you will have. With a little practice you can zip through grow tips plucking off tendrils,flowers and tertiaries.

I'm going with cojoe and doing the pruning a day before burying to let the wound heal over exposed to the air rather than soil. cojoe, thank you for helping me out so much. Even last year you were there with great help. Thanks.

Porkchop, I saw a video of a guy doing just what you described. Giant long vine and he just gave it a huge jerk!! Never showed where it was hooked to the secondary, probably not good. LOL

Just a word of caution. When happily going around your plant picking off the tendrils, unwanted blossoms and tertiaries, don’t mistake the main for a secondary. More than once it’s happened to me, cutting a secondary off the main, thinking for only a second it’s a secondary.
