foaming stumps are a huge pain in the ass . if not caught in time, drained, dried, treated, blowing fans, umbrellas, ete, etc, most of the time you loose the base.
something we have done the past couple years is to remove the first two sets of side vine thus reducing the amt of moisture being passed back to the plants base.
it does not guarentee no foaming but really helps reduce the amt of foamers.
ya just got to be patient and cut those first couple side vine sets off.

Just an idea but what about not burying the first few side vines on either side. Just an idea since you mentioned excess moisture... Less roots, less moisture?

I've wondered about removing the roots on the first secondaries, but I remove the first secondaries when they are very small

if your going to remove something? do it like you would third stage growth ( we pinch off as soon as they show themselves - usually while vine burying)
Henry if you do have a foaming stump yes --- a drilled hole will allow for pressure release of foam.
a good way to predict when a foaming stump is planning a visit? the area around the plants base has a circle of wetness around it--- foamer soon to follow

I remove 3 to 4 secondaries on each side, before the plant lays down. Like pap said. This way they are healed up before it's time to bury. And I normally get 2 to 4 foamers a year.
