so my first time growing a giant pumpkin, my main vine is 5' long and just seen two male flowers very close to the main root and I know they'll come before female flowers but is it common for them to be so close to the main root area or should they be further down the main vine

Couldn't open the file...I wouldn't worry too much about it...get the big pumpkin app and start a grow diary...how long ago was the plant 3' long?

Common thoughts are to keep the stump clear & dry...I would trim small things around the stump & set up a small shelter to keep the stump dry. Male flowers, as well as females will show up further down the vine. Most folks seem to look for a female to pollinate at 10' or more, which will allow you plenty of males to choose from.
