How far out on the main vine from the stump do you grow the first side vines? The first ones that appear? Then how much spacing do you have between side vines? I'm doing a xmas tree pattern. Cut every other one on a side? Let each one grow?

Let as many as you can grow I only trim ones that do not want to do what I want them to do or that are not a good grower I mean some kinda fizzle out while others crank

It is possible that once a fruit is set, that a side vine will need to be cut to allow room for that giant pkn. Other than that, unless out of control, I see no need to remove side vines! Peace, Wayne

Roughly let them grow 12-15 feet on each side of the main. Bury them also to promote root growth at leaf joints.

remove the vines(Tertiary) that grow out of the side Vines(secondaries)

A more advanced grow would be to allow some tertiary vines to grow off the first two side vines and the last two secondaries before the pumpkin

No, I mean, do I grow the first set of side vines out? Or do I let the stump get so long before I let side vines grow? (Secondary growth)

Some people trim off the first 1 or 2 side vines to help prevent a foaming stump

Let the first ones(secondaries) that appear grow out and all the ones after it. Some people cut the secondary off at the pumpkin, sometimes can cause issues. Also some people cut off the first few secondaries, if they have issues with foaming stumps as baitman mentioned.

As Baitman suggested! I remove the first couple so I can put a cover over the stump to keep it dry and shaded. If I could grow a good healthy plant I would remove every third side vine for a walk board and easy access to the main vine.
