I had a female I was hoping to pollinate a couple days ago but it never opened..now it looks like the flower is wilting...been very hot...later female on another plant opened this morning..can I pry this one open and try to pollinate? Kin is still solid. 1912 Carter so I would like to pollinate as soon as possible.

Do you have any pics? Could try to pollinate but odds are its past fertile stage. I have had some that partially open. Forced them open and they turned out fine

Opened it up and it was wet and orange inside..done..it was a practice run..I'm guessing because we had 3" of much needed rain over the weekend that I should have kept it dry as the next one out hasn't progressed at all with splatter on the kin from rain and the next one out is looking fine and should be ready for pollination in a couple days. About 13' out on the vine. Going to cover before todays rain. Input on keeping young ones dry would be appreciated. Must have missed something on this subject.

Seems as though I had seen where somebody cut a laundry basket and covered kins with that. I just did something like that with milk crates and covered them with white water repellent material over hanging the tops with about 2' x 2' cover and weighted them down.

Sometimes females abort before opening. Nothing you can do but wait for another one. Late pollinations can grow very fast, sometimes too fast and they split. If it gets late you might want 2 or 3 on the plant to prevent splitting early, then cut back to one in a few weeks.

Mark you survived the frost although stunted. You're in the mix in my personal patch with the 1047 and the 1374 Engel. The 1374 cracked at the stump but when I buried the vine it's making a comeback. Want those genetics. T
