If you dig a pit in clay based soil to lay cables.You may just build a swimming pool to hold water in a wet season.This is what I did last year to avoid this issue.Digging a pit isnt necessary.I know Joe Platte doesnt dig pits.This year I think I will lay my cables maybe 4-5 inches below surface and then mound up another 4-5 inches of soil.This way if we have a wet year,my stump is high & dry.

Also before you lay your cables in use a broadfork, deepspader, or a pitchfork to fracture subsoil thoroughly for better drainage all season.

Great advice, guys. My subsoil is only 10 inches down from the surface. I need to do a double dig/broadfork in my planting pits this year and broadfork the rest of the patch frequently to help drainage. Fortunately, my patch is inclined so my neighbor gets the excess moisture.
