I went out to check my pumpkin (Big Max, not AG) and found a 4 inch crack going straight through the blossom end of the pumpkin. I think I know the answer to my question, but is my season done? Is there anything I can do to prevent the crack from enlarging and from diseases getting in? My heart sank . . . so much time and effort. Pics to follow soon.

If the split goes into the cavity you are done. Once outside air enters the sterile cavity rot will set in. If not into the cavity, put a fungicide on the split and keep as dry as possible.

The split was not through to the cavity yesterday but was today :(
I guess I'll try and set the next female bud so I can at least have a pumpkin for Halloween.
I just want to know what I did wrong! Here are some pics:

Sometimes it just happens no matter what you do. Having enough Calcium in the soil, and keeping your watering consistant are two ways to battle the splits. Sometimes it is genetic. Whatever the reason, it happens to the best of us. I found this in my patch the very next day after I replied to your post. That's why I grow 6 plants.

Sorry to see that! I grew a 90lb Big Max pollinated in August back in the early 2000's, so there's still hope you'll grow one much bigger than anything you can buy. Just out of curiosity, what was that pumpkin's weight estimating at before it split?
