Farming- a bunch of catastrophies that result in a lifestyle

Hi. I have four pumpkins well set. We have had five days of rain and flooding. Pre rain it was in the upper 90's. It's mid 80's during all this rain, and as soon as it ends its going to jump right back to record heat- upper 90's. Several questions here:
1. My set babies are growing, although it varies day to day, plant to plant. The PW's are: 2", 0", 1", the one AG I have set hasn't grown in three days, still at 9"- but her stem is growing everyday. Is this normal growth pattern for these types?
2. I have three or four girls preparing to open, maybe in the next week. Today it's in the 80's, but beginning Wednesday it's going right to upper 90's. When should I start putting ice jugs next to them? Before they open or only after they open? Also, how long after pollination in these temps should I keep ice jugs around them?

Put some shade over them when the vine has laid down(2 to 4 days before opening).Ice them on the day you pollinate

Do you think its just weather as to why they are growing so slow? they were hitting it at 2'' a day, the PW's anyway, I didn't have a dills set then.

I don't no why the stem would be growing but not the pumpkin. My experience has been that if the pumpkin stops growing in the 8-12 inch range that always means it has aborted. I doubt it will grow again but you can leave it on for a few more days just to be sure.

Shes still nice and shiny, and firm this morning. I guess I will just leave her until I see what it does...this is day 5 of this "I'm gonna grow nothing but stem" thing.
