I am a small field pumpkin grower (2 acres) looking to produce a few big orange(talking 300-400 pounders)to use as exhibits at my pumpkin farm stand. I have ordered some 1385Jutras seed which is supposed to have the orange gene. Is this a good choice and how much work will I have to put into getting only a few hundred pounder.

hmmm I would recommend something with a little more promise of orange. When you say you ordered some 1385 seeds. I am assuming these are crosses of 1385's. As 1385's would be pretty expensive to just throw in a field.
Type In Howard Dill Award into the site search to get a good idea of excellent crosses that have proven to be what you want to grow.
If you don't find what you are looking for email me...

Also I recommend from past experience 12 foot rows with 20 foot spacing of you are just going to plant them and not baby them.

Linus, thanks for the response. I will probably baby them a little. Plan on putting them in thier own patch close to the shed with my water source. Seeds are probably a cross but weren't cheap compared to my field pumpkin see prices. 3 seeds for $10. Got 6 seeds. Will start them in the greenhouse and transplant. 904 Stalts was also mentioned in the seed description.

A really good seed goes from $300-$1600 dollars depending on demand. But the seeds with the same genetics can be obtained for a simple please and thank you.

you are right that they must be a cross since there is no way I would pay 300+ for a pumkin to sit out for a display. lol I got the seeds from GiantPumpkin.com. All I'm hoping for is a really big orange pumpkin. I've grown some Big Max's and Atlantic Giants that were around 100 lbs but nothing close to the 200-400 pounder I would like.

Gary, Ron, and Scott - thank you very much for the seed. Now I have seed for some big oranges, big field pumpkins, and hopefully a big white. Thanks again. The people on this site are amazing.
