It spreads out your weight a little bit and helps to keep the soil from compacting too much when you walk on it. The roots can grow better if the soil is less compact.

On a healthy plant in a well prepared soil the small and very fine roots will extend out from the plant, some may extend several feet past the plant. If you'll lay a board down next to the plant, wait a week or more, then turn the board up you'll see the roots! The more roots the bigger the pumpkin will get! Hope this helps! BSD David
