I noticed in some video's on line that growers have the stem protected with something. What is the purpose for doing that?

GrowerZ cove the stump to keep it from getting too much water from normally a automatic sprinkler. We dont want the stump to rot due to too much watering... We want it kept dry. Last year a grower I know put a head too close to his stump and it rotted on BIZ. Hope he rememberZ he did that thiZ year!
