Still reading and the more I read the more questions I have. I bought 3 seeds from Howard Dill (H.sproule 1294). Would I have been better off to get different seeds from other pumpkins? I was hoping to just self pollinate these and expect good results but after looking at some of the heavy weights... it looks like they have all been cross pollinated. Around here I dont know anyone else trying to grow these monsters to trade a seed. Any thoughts?
Thanks

Plenty of big ones grown from selfing. 1725 Harp(world record) was a 1385 jutras selfed.1723marshall was a 1634 werner selfed. 1610 leiber was a 1161 rodinis selfed. Go to aggc.org or to pumpkinlink.com and you can look up the family tree and productions.

Crossing would only benefit you with next year's seed. If you selfed a 1294 or grew a female from the 1294 crossed with something else, it wouldn't matter. The genetics are already determined for the fruit of the 1294 by it's parent(s). The male genetics from the pollen you crossed with this year would be held in the seed of the pumpkin grown off the 1294. Most people cross to make a good combo for next year, and it is nice to grow a few different seeds in your garden cause you'll get different results.
