On one of my patches I am going to have to plant from a corner which will mean that the secondaties will get shorter. I realise we grow the plant first and the pumpkin after but is there a advisable length at which we should terminate as I would like to grow the earlier secondaries longer to compensate?
Thanks
Pete

I grow my secondaries out about 12'-15'. I've read that the ideal number of secondaries at that length is about 10. This is my 3rd year so I'm no expert yet.

That's 10 secondaries before the pumpkin. The number of secondaries after the pumpkin is up for debate. Some terminate the main at the pumpkin some let it keep growing. Both methods seem to have successful results.

The 12 to 15 foot length is also what I follow and having oddly shaped areas means that it is possible to curve and guide your vines where you want them according to the space their in. My secondaries on my plant in the end of my patch last year had to be curved at six feet and ran out parallel to the main vine for another 8 feet before I terminated it but it worked out good though..
