I understand, sorta...that systemics work to deal w/ the bug's...they eat & then die!!!! Awl good!!! If the bug that bites is translocating diseases into yer plant...? What happens then? Is my question? Major infestation of squash/stink bugs last year that destroyed my plants!!! Bugs/dead....Plants/dead also!!!! All help appreciated! Peace, Wayne

Wayne, You need to have a proactive insecticide and fungicide program, the key word is PROACTIVE, systemics alone will not cure all of the issues that can arrise from an infestation. They will however kill the bugs that bite and help control how many bugs remain on the plants, feeding and breeding. The same goes with the fungicide, you need to protct your plants well before you see a disease. Once a disease has attacked your plants, you usually don't see it until it has moved to the top of your leaves, or manifested itself as it has progressed, soil borne diseases that attack the roots are even worse, by the time you identify them, its normally too late, or they have cost you a decent season, you have to be proactive. In my honest opinion, you need to have 3 types of controls: Systemic - Contact - and Traps when possible.

Depends on the bug wayne.Squash bugs and cuke beetles (spreading virus or bacteria) need to be eradicated before they stick their proboscus into your beloved pumpkin plant.Vine borers are best killed with a contact(warrior t) and trapped.Aphids- probably a systemic and a contact.Ive had squash bugs taking me down for years(didnt know till this year, that they were causing YVD).I need to trap em,distract em(crookneck squash plants),squash 'em and hit em with strong contact insecticides

I have found that a garlic combination foliar spray once per week is also helpful to prevent the aphids and perhaps the squash bugs from entering your patch..( BioRepl )

After I spray some fish and kelp, mixed with a dose of garlic, the wife usually complains. I just think it smells like an Italian restaurant at the sea shore.
I have been using it for years with good results.

We used garlic once a week and again after a rain this entire year as a foliar, on top of Contact and systemic treatment. We experienced almost no bugs at all. The ones that we did see were usually when it had been 6-7 days since the last garlic application. I think we will add garlic spray every 5 days next year to see if we can repel all the bugs. Repeling is definitely my goal, since besides just disease spread by feeding insects, some (striped cucumber beetles for one) spread disease by their waste, so they don't have to do anything but land on the plant and take a crap to spread their payload. I don't want them there at all.
