Is this normal at all? I have 2 splits on my 8 day old about 1/8 of an inch in where the stem meets the pumpkin. It's not in the cavity, but this would surely be a problem down the road if already happening?
Thanks

luke, they can do some surface cracking that wont amount to anything.most true stem splits happen about day thirty plus.the pumpkin(where the stem connects) grows faster than the stem can expand and whalla!!!! theyll happen overnight-its not the stem splitting thats the problem it the pumpkin splitting continuous with the split in the stem that can open up into the cavity of the fruit

Hey Cojoe, I will link the thread to my diary once the pic is approved. It is right where the pumpkin meets the stem. I'll let you decide when I get the pic up.
Thanks

Tammy, very similar, but not as long. Mine might be deeper but really hard to tell.

It's packed with captan so hard to tell, but the crack extends over to the left just as deep into the pumkpin.

Luke, normal...not to worry unless it goes to the flesh.
All those smaller micro tears will heal and toughen over like hardened leather!

Luke, looked at you're new picture, and I would stay with it. Do the peroxide, fungicide, captan etc. If nothing else it'll be good practice for late season difficulties!!!! I'm still waiting for first pollination. Hopefully in the next couple days! Best to ya, BSD, David

Luke, this is normal, as North Shore stated, unless it goes into the flesh, you are fine. Tammy, I saw your cull, personally, I would have not culled that fruit.

well dang it, I thought since it had spread to the stem that it would eventually cause a big problem.. Next time I'll wait and get a second opinion. Thanks Tom :)

I feel that that is an indicator of a potentially vigorous fruit. As long as the split can be described as superficial ..I look at it simply as a way the fruit relieves the stress of rapid growth. Most of the time the shallow splits dry up and aren't an issue.
