I was looking through the grower diaries and it looks like some people bury there vines right up and over the stump and some people leave the stump exposed and start their burying at the first leaf node. Any thoughts on which way is preferable and why?

My soil doesn't drain very well and I did an experiment last year with two marrows. One I burried everything from the stump out and one with the stump exposed with vine burying starting a few feet out. The one with the burried stump rotted out very quickly! May be diff with diff soil conditions.

Don't bury stumps!!! I lost pumpkins 2 years in a row because I had foaming stumps and didn't have a clue because stumps were covered with dirt. Leave your stumps unburied and check them everyday.
Build a little shelter of some sort that allows air to circulate around the stump, but still shelters it from rain and waterings.

I thought the consensus was keep the stump dry… I wouldn’t bury it.
