put about 600 lb of mulch maple leaves on my patch then i put about 6 in of seaweed kelp on top of leaves is this good for my soil for growing a big one ?????/

Be sure to get your soil tested in spring to make sure you aren't over doing it in any areas or lacking as well.

That depends Jim, that's a whole lot of organic matter there. I like your approach but like Luke says, a soil test will tell you where you are, without one you're shooting blind, good luck!

Has anyone done a soil test on composted leaves?? We have what is called "leaf mulch" available from the towns here in western NY which is crumbly and almost black. I guess I could send a sample to A+L for $32 but maybe someone already has the numbers.

it will work well but ya gots ta keep the green and yellow leaves from mixing with the red and rust colored.
i hope the seaweed was washed of all salts before putting it down?

no the vsea weed was not wash i have used it before for years never every wash it never had a problem with growing i grow all type of vegs

I think pap means you can't have to much of it in the garden. I myself use sea water in my patch as a soil builder, seaagri.com all it takes is 1 teaspoon to a gallon of de-hydrated ocean water, sea water has more minerals and trace elements than any supplement there is.

it was always my understanding that the salt in unwashed seaweed harvested from shore lines was not good for the soil. kinda like the salts that we used to get in our soils way back when we used commercial granular fertalizers.

one of the best growers in new engkand several years back used seaweed harvested on shore lines but always washed it before putting down on the patch.

personally i would not use freash seaweed unless i washed off the salts first

pap we had a lot of rain couple days after i only use seaweed kelp every second years
