What is it and how do you do it?

All they are cuttings. They get them rooted in a tray while they are still on the vine and then cut the cutting off once it has a good root system. This process is repeated until spring time(if it is done in the fall). Earlier this season I placed about a foot long cutting in some water and it rooted.
If you made the clone early enough in the season you could grow a pumpkin on it.

I started two "clones" this year just to see if I could.

These plants WANT to grow so it really isn't that hard. Heck I had trimmings that I cut off and just threw in a pile start growing again. Of course it was during the middle of the growing season so that made it easier.

I tried two different methods. First one I just took the last 3 feet of a tip, cut it off and buried the whole thing -- with some mycorrhiza --(leaving the tip out of course). Watered it and in about 5 days it was off and growing. I let it grow until it got in the way. But before I removed it I cut off the main tip back far enough that had a good tap root and put it in a bucket. I kept it growing for rest of season -- just to see if I could.

Second way was to put a pot under a leavf node and let the tap root start before I cut the vine. This was much less stress on the plant and it never skipped a beat. kept right on growing.

Cloning is basically making more plants that are genetically the same.

I have been working on doing this during the off-season and I am still going through a learning curve but I hope to be getting closer to an efficient system. If you look at my dairy from this 2010 year you can get an idea for what is involved. Again this is just one system but I did my best to try and document some of the steps long the way.

Mainly my January 6th, 2010 to April 9th, 2010 postings are related to giant pumpkin plant cloning.
