whell, it looks like despite my efforts to fight off powerdy milldue it is un controlably working it's from the leves around the stump up and out the vine. I want to keep the pumpkin growing and freash as long as possible so i can use it for haloween, should i just keep it coverd and attached to the vine or do i need to cut it off at some point?

How big is it ? If two people can get a tarp under it, keep it in a cool,dry, dark place like a basement or garage. Be sure to put a board under it. I have kept small ones (100-150 pounds) for close to two months. They will keep longer then that in the above mentioned conditions.
One more important thing is to rinse the entire pumpkin with a bleach/ water mix. (1 part bleach to 9 parts water).

I would probably leave it on the vine a while longer if your vines are nice and solid still, unless you have a lot of damp weather in the forcast.
