Hey all!
Another senario... I grew 4 AG's and planted them in a small patch (600sqft) The plants got big, two of which eventually fruited. Through hindsight, I now know that I shoulda pulled the other two out, 'cause now, I have 4 plants in a two plant patch. I kept them for pollinization.

What would happen in a 1 plant patch? I understand that I created a new breed by crossing the plants but, could one plant grow a giant?

Other than making the fruit viable, the pollination doesn't affect this years fruit. Rather it creates the genetics for the seeds for next year.

This years fruit size will be determined by the parents of the seed you planted this year, and of course your ability to make it's environment good enough for it to reach it's full potential.

skisher, of course you could....AG's, and all pkn plants have both male & female blossums!!! Selfed punkins are grown to massive sizes every year!!! Lot's of AG growers like to input new gene's into their progeny, to grow the SIZE, or COLOR, or SHAPE, of the cross that their seeds will produce the following year. Once again, I hope this helps!!! Keep on askin questions!!! Oh, by the way...not a new breed...we're all growin Dill's Atlantic Giants...but "YES" a new cross. Peace, Wayne

Thanks all, I guess I am thinkin' ahead to next year. Will a one plant fruit be strong and viable Year after Year? Or will it produce an in-bred genetic anomily that will eventually just suck.....

I think that's a good genetics question, but it's well beyond my abilities to provide a good answer.

Maybe one of the heavier hitters here could shed some light on the whole 'x self' aspect of the genetics and what could be expected over 'continuous' generations of x self pollination.

In 600 sq ft you could grow a second plant of different genetics just for pollination flowers and then pull it once you have some fruits set. I do this in my small space of 500 ft. It gets a little crowded for a bit but it works. The pollination plant can also be a little behind( in growth) the main plant since male flowers seem to appear before females. I also neglect it a little so it doesn't grow as much as the main.
