How does one 'lose the stump'? Ive read several threads and diarys about it but Im confused as to what exactly that means? Can a vine live without the stump? Maybe what Im calling the stump is really something else lol Tammy

No you are calling the stump correctly ! -- figure once the vine grows enough and you have kept up with burying the main and secondary vines so that they root at each leaf node if something happens (ie. foamy stump) then the plant will have enough roots and can still continue to grow even if you wind up losing the stump. (similar to a clone that has had time to reroot itself)

Tammy, I grew 3 or 4 small JOL's last year after I lost my stump\main vine to the vine borer. Once you lose the main stump, you will have minimal growth, but you can keep fruit alive till late summer or early fall.

Sometimes the stump will rot for one reason or another. At that point it has to be cut to keep the problem from spreading down the vine. The plant itself has such a huge root system that it can sustain itself pretty well. If I remember correctly Pap grew one around 900 pounds a few years ago on a plant with no stump (correct me if I am wrong Pap).

I thought thats what it meant but I just couldnt believe that was possible so I was sure I was misunderstanding. Thats just unreal, I never would have dreamed a vine could live without the stump. Its mind boggling what these plants are capable of! Thanks guys :) Tammy

TTammy, you nailed it rather well!!! "Mind Boggling"!!!! Lot's & prbly, 99.999% of folks, have no way to wrap their minds around the idea of a pkn that weighs 1725#'s!!! Tell it to a few folks, and watch their reactions!!! Most look at you like yer a nut case...which might be true!!!(me anyways) LOL Peace, Wayne

I cut my "stump" out on my problem child along with 5 ft of vine yesterday due to rot. Posted some pics today.
