sorry for so many questions, but was I wrong to pull a few pollinated females on the 5th and 6 days instead of waiting till days 10 - 15? Or another way to ask is do some grow very slow in the beginning, but in the long run grow much faster than the early growers? Is it better to wait to see true growth rates. I have learned a ton this 1st year and just hope to get better.

Thanks

I think 5 or 6 days is too young.

I think you should always have two growing, that way you can pick which one to keep and if one dies you can use the other one. I also keep a few on the last side vines going if something happens to main vine pumpkins, the side vine can become the main vine if disaster strikes.

I've been re-reminding myself that you can't tell much about a pumpkin in the first 14 days of growth. The half pound of growth per day that goes on during the first 10 days means nothing compared to the growth that happens 30 days after pollination. Being patient can pay off sometimes.
