i bury at the spot where the leaf stem meets the main. thats where the tap roots will grow. i leave the area in between the tap root areas exposed to air and sun.--i do the same with side vines. always use at least one 2-3ft bamboo stake a few inches in from each vine tip to hold in position and assist thevine from rolling over on windy days. never bury the vine tips-ever. it takes a few days and up to a week to get the main vine down and laying on the ground. it is a gentle process and rushing the process and/or forcing the vine to much on any given day will end with a snaped main vine. sometimes the main is 2-3ft long before its firmly on the ground and running. lots of top growers in the ohio valley giant pumpkin growers club. you need to hook up with that club. pap
