Two of my plants in gallon pots have gotten very leggy, to the point that they won't stand up on their own. The stem below the cots is 5"-6" long. I am now ready to transplant them to the patch. How deep should I plant them? Most of the way up the stem or the same level as in the pot but with a support stick for the long stem?

I've been told that you want to plant them up to the cot leaves when you put them into the patch. It helps them to stay more rigid and they will start to root out the sides of the stem. Also don't forget to plant them at a slight angle towards the direction that you want the main vine to run.

Ok guys, I'm not quite ready to transplant yet, but that is the same question that I had. But, I have one more, what is a cot. Is that the first leaves?

yep cot leaves or seed leaves are the first two leaves you see.

Definitely plant the seedlings all the way up to the bottom of the cot leafs which are the first two oval shaped looking leafs, the 3rd leaf will be the first true leaf and this 3rd leaf will represent what the rest of the leafs will look like.

It will prob be a good idea to put the seed in the ground at a slight angel in which the main will fall and run to ease stress on the main when the vine lays down. In most cases the main vine will fall opposite of the first true leaf.

When your young seedlings sprout in the pot in your house if you put the light on the seedling is far away the seedling will reach for the light and get really long and leggy, the closer you put the light (to an extent) the more short and stocky the seedling will be.

you can also put a fan blowing on the seedling for a few hrs a day and this will help it from getting really leggy as well.
