id like to strongly suggest both a space heater and in ground heating cables.
the in ground hweating cables are as important as the air temp. roots will not grow if the soil is cold.

here in Upstate NY you will need your heater on until June 1st. Nights in the month of May get cold and even a frost until June.

the pelonis hc-461 space heater has a nice digital thermsostatic control and works great. the best price on line i see is on the following link at $89.99. i have been using them for the past 5 or 6 years and recommend them highly.

everyday i pull around the corner i smile Boz....it is a big mutha. my buddy drove by and said "what the hell is that big booby doing in the middle of your yard?"

yep...the neighbors gotta love me. not sure how they feel cuz all i do is give em a quick wave while looking all sweaty and dirty in a fast paced motion and i think they are scared to even come over to ask. i kinda like it that way. lol. and when they approach the fence, the fangs are glaring from my psycho beast of a dog. then they turn around and rarely come back. i can only imagine when it gets hot out and my shirt comes off in the summertime what they are saying at dinner time. and then the days i have the stighl fogger going is probably like a movie night for them as i resemble john goodman from arachnophobia and give them the show of shows, especially when i got stung by a swarm of wasps while in the process last year and the trigger arm was flailing all over with my clinched finger on the trigger shooting fungicide in every direction and my glasses flew off. nothing like a beer induced fat sweaty blind mess of a human being with a motorized fogger on his back getting stung by a swarm of wasps and shooting a cloud a fungicide 20' into the air. lol. where is the video recorder when you need it. that is the life of shazzy shazanova. yep, i am a real piece of work. lol.

lol Shazz those wasps wouldn't be laughing if you had some Bifen IT or other insecticide in the Stihl when they swarmed you!

For what it counts I used temporary hoops with 6 mil plastic and no additional heat source and had a very good year in 09. Not as good as Shazzy's season but nobody's perfect lol.

i hear ya orangeneck. lol. the wasps got it the following day as they were living in an old abandoned bird house.

as far as newgrowers go, orangeneck has very good advice here. you do not need fancy greenhouses or space heaters to grow big pumpkins. do not think just cuz you buy them and use them that they will work automatically. there are advantages to me using them early on, but most plants kick in gear and compensate anyways when the weather warms up and they catch up fast. these "toys" are not necessary to grow giant pumpkins. but my peace of mind of being prepared for high winds and a chance of freezing temps until the end of may are why i use these toys. all it took was one season of my homemade hoophouses getting repeatedly tore apart from high wind in storms, and then one prolonged cold spring with yellowing leaves from nitrogen deficiencies from cold soil, to force me to buy the toys. i decided i needed them to combat these obstacles, and have peace of mind in the rollercoaster ride of chicago spring weather. there are many cheaper alternatives that should be explored before just spending money like i do. but i will say onething, i am a big kid who still likes my toys. lol. and the shazzydome is my favorite new toy in 2010 so far. how it reacts to the first spring storm with 70 mph winds and how hot will it get inside with all vents open are still to be seen. i have an exhaust fan and a misting system to help combat that. lol. its a sickness. lol.
