Is it critical to put something under the pumpkin? I see that many people do it. I live in Portland, OR if it makes a difference. If is should be done, would landscape fabric work? I'm really not sure what this is supposed to accomplish.

One of the reason many growers put either mill fabric or play sand under their pumpkins is to help keep the bottom of the pumpkin dry so it won't rot out. I like to put a piece of landscape fabric down so mice or insects don't burrow up into the pumpkin from the dirt. I then put play sand on top of the landscape fabric because it drains and it allows the pumpkin to easily slide as it grows.

Mill fabric & sand. Mice can't chew through it. We can more easily adjust vine/fruit without damage. Drainage is great.

You got some good answers here already. My favorite thing to put under the pumpkin is the scale at the end of the season.
