Im curious about early weigh in dates. The county fair has a pumpkin contest the last week in July. Is it possible to have a giant ready by then? I can hardly wait to go see whats entered this yr so I'll know what Im up against for next yr :) lol

Indiana State Fair...mid August!!! Bear Wallow Farms(Kentucky Giant Pumpkin Growers)...3rd Sat. in September!!!(I think) Two earliest GPC weigh offs that I know of...search GPC... !!! Lots of county and state fairs have weigh offs that are not GPC!!! GO, and SEE!!! LOL Best advice that I can offer, is to bring a Slunger to Bear Wallow Farms!!! The worst you could do is wear a b/w cap!!! Grow em BIG!!! Peace, Wayne

its not like a real pumpkin contest, its just the county fair. They have a biggest pumpkin, tallest corn stalk, largest sunflower etc. Its silly but Id sure like to win it next yr, braggin' rights ya know LOL Bear Wallow is added to the 'must see' list! lol

Tammy you have same problem I do here with the county fair, too early for most of the produce to come in. I did take two to our fair last year, and won a total of $2.50 and three ribbons. Mine had to stay outside too on a trailer in the lot by the door. It DID get a lot of publicity and they did weigh them for me. It'd be awesome if you can take one though, and get people interested in growing.... good luck. A purple ribbon with 'grand champion' on it's worth a lot of bragging rights :D

Last years county fair was week of Sept 8th, and I had a 425 and a 324 entered. First place $1.50, second place $1.00 and one purple grand prize ribbon.

Heck the Tulsa state fair pays a whole $10 for first place with a $4 entry fee. If I win I might be able to pay for my gas their and back.

That's why we're working on a real weighoff late season, so we have a chance of something to weigh. Growing for the fair means starting in early March and all that jazz, fighting weather for a few months...
