When and where is it a good time to put dirt on top of the vine to start a secondary root system??? I've heard this is a tip that lots of punkin growers use!

thanks!!

we bury right from the first ft of main that forms. also we bury side vines as well.

usually done by digging a small trench about a few inches deep and in the direction you are training the vines.
mains usually are trained to go straight out from the base

picture the base at 12 oclock and the main runs at 6 oclock and sides run 3 or 9 oclock depemding on the side of the main they drop

if your plant is well along dont dig around the base because you will tear up the developing root system.better in this case to just cover the vine without trenching if your working close to the base.

Does burying the entire vine inhibit flowers and secondaries from forming at the nodes and cause the stems of leaves to rot?

Also, after hand pollination, how many days until you can tell that it "took"? I've pollinated 4 so far and the first is obviously not turning into a pumpkin. I wonder about the other three. The second one I pollinated was on the 3rd.

you should be able to tell if it "took" the next day. it will be bright in color, or look like its going to wither away. check the stem of the fruit also, thats a good indicator
