Hi,

One of my plants has a nice main vine around 7 feet long. At the very base of the plant another vine started growing on top of main vine. It was growing in a verticle direciton instead of towards the ground. It was only a few feet long but very vigorous. I noticed today after a wind storm that it had a crack at the base. The crack is right on top of the plant and is perfectly positioned to let the rain etc. The crack is wide enough that I can see into the vine. I cut the vine off a foot from the crack to take off the weight. The remaiing vine is horizontal and poinitng downwards but I'm worried about the base where the crack is.

My question: will the cracked part at the base of the plant seal itself so water and who know what else doesn't get into the plant or can I do something to help it heal.

You can take capitan powder (get at any greenhouse) and make a paste out of it and fill in the crack. No matter what it will heal itslef in about 14 days time. Put somthing over it to keep it dry.

What part of colorado are you from. I live in Westminster area. Lots of growers here in Colorado. I am sure one of us could come by and help you if you want.

Last year I planted 3 atlantic giant seeds from an old package of seed in a 10 x 10 square and grew ten 130-170 pound pumpkins. It was so much fun watchihg the pumpkins grow that I wanted to try it again.

This year I sent away for seeds, started them inside, increased the size of my bed and planted them further a part. Last year all I did was water and watch them grow. This year I'm out there every day and I don't even have a flower yet, just a lot of worries :) but no hail (yet).
