My kids wanted to grow AG this year.I am completely clueless when it comes to gardening but this year I dove in head first. OUCH!!!!! I got a quick reality check, ground hogs, rabbits, slugs...... I can't win. My AG's were started very late I now only have 4 leaves on one and 2 leaves on the other. Can anyone give me an outlook as what I can expect for a yield this year. I wanted 400+ but I don't think that is even remotely possible now.

You have plenty of other growers up your way, take notes this year and find someone up your way to help you out a bit. Next year you should get 400# ...

it's hard to speculate exactly what size pumpkin you can obtain, lots of limitating factors such as weather, diseases and insects, I'd suggest you join the Nepga, attend a few pumpkin related functions, and pick up some pointers from other growers.
At this time of the year you should be getting ready to pollinate your pumpkins, you will need to start earlier next year.

I've started a AG pumpkin from scratch this time of year. Are you going to get a monster? No. Can you get 200 to 200 pounds. You bet. So just hang in there, try to get a pollination by around mid-August and see what happens. Believe me, the kids are shocked to see even a 50 pound pumpkin let alone a 200 pounder!

I started a seed on June 9th a few years ago for a student who coulnd't get his to germinate. He ended up not wanting the plant so I just stuck it in an empty part of the garden. I got the pumpkin to 300 pounds. Depending on the weather and your soil, 400 might be a stretch, but you never know.

200 lbs is a reasonable goal & the kids will be psyched! Do try to meet with the NEPGA. They'll have a summer picnic & tour where you'll meet the nicest growers & learn a bunch.
