I have 3 hills of 2 vines each. I know I need to cull out at least half of them. One of the vines is very yellow while the others are green. Is there an advantage or a disadvantage to a yellow vine? Its the fastest growing and had the first female bloom but the color makes me hesitant to keep it.

Where did the seeds come from? Was the same seed used for each of these vines?
Some seed stocks produce yellow vines. Others green.
There are also diseases that result in yellow vines so knowing the seed you're growing will help ascertain if this is a problem or just a chance occurrence.

Im ashamed to admit I got the seeds from eBay. Probably not the best idea huh? :( I'll know better next time, this yr is a learning experience for me. If I can just grow a pumpkin bigger than my sister I'll be happy. lol

general thinking is that yellow vines produce more orange fruit(not all but more), good luck
keep watching these boards and ask questions as they comeup, a learning year is a good thing maybe you will come to your senses and get out while you still can ;-)

I bought seeds from a local garden store last year (my first year) and my biggest was 303. you have a shot a growing a bigger one than your sister. Just keep a realistic goal so that you are not dissappointed by not breaking the world record come September. Like unkadan said, keep reading the boards and asking questions. The people here are more than willing to hand out advice. If I did not find this site last year, I can pretty much say that I would not be doing this again this year. Getting advice on BP helped me out tremendously!

I had one vine last year that was bright neon-ish yellow, but that was the line. I contacted the grower and he reassured me that that was a normal color, the mother had been that color as well. The leaves were the proper color, the vine grew, and gave me my present PB (425#)
If the rest of the plant looks the picture of health and the leaves are right; if you don't know the pedigree of your seed so you can ask; it is probably okay. Deficiencies and diseases that can cause a vine to turn yellowish usually also impact the color of the leaves.

Have fun growing what you have. Keep posting questions here & learn. Mistakes are good as long as we learn from them. Watch the grower diaries. The entries will slow down next month as newbs lose plants & interest. The folks who keep going will help you formulate a plan for 2010.
Go to a weigh-off with ANYTHING you grow. Don't be worried how big it is. You'll learn more at a weigh-off than any where else. You'll also meet your areas growers which should be the primary goal for all new growers whether they get a fruit on the scales or not.
This November there will be more free high quality seeds than you can shake a shovel at.
