How do you keep these little buggers away from pumpkins? We tried to trap them...but they are not buying the trap idea, in fact I think I heard them laughing as they ran past the trap into my garden..lol!

I use an electric fence, fox or coyote urine, poison smoke bombs in dens, and a .22 magnum. You have to use the whole arsenal on them as they can destroy your season in a single day. Just ask Carlson&Petersen: they would have won at Anamosa last year if a ground hog hadn't eaten a hole in their 1300#+ pumpkin just a few days before weighoff.

Get a terrier dog. My dog is a terrier and has killed several groundhogs, rabbits and racoons.

If you have a live catch trap...find the critters main hole. It will be the one that looks the most used obviously. Place the trap right at the edge of the hole. Then push sticks (I use my old arrows) into the ground to make a fence around the hole. Ground hogs are pretty dumb in my opinion. You can trap them easily by doing this. The idea is to corral them into the trap. If they have numerous other holes, cover them with rocks. Once you trap them, you should drive it at least 10 miles away to release it.

milford, CT,

I agree with Dan...Find their hole..find their paths...look for a pinch point between a fence or bushes..bait the trap outside and inside with apples or peaches or whatever they are eating in your yard. They also love clover. Also...if you are relocating them go at least 10 miles...they are really good at finding their way home. Yeh I know your not supposed to relocate them but like no one does it!

conibear traps! find the main hole. place the trap over it and block the rest of the hole with rocks or sticks. no bait needed. as they exit the whole, blammo the giant chiropractor adjusts their neck! if you find any other holes, block them off totally. force them to the trap. remember these little guys have a whole little highway system underground. If you happen to catch DIGGER from Fox broadcasting and NASCAR, shoot him and make sure he is dead. I can't stand that little cartoon before the races!

I have my radio set on the hard rock station. It stays cranked up from the time they are seedlings until harvest time.I make the joke to everyone that it keeps everything away except cucumber beetles and squash bugs.

your right on race. we started playing a radio in the patch several years ago. the noise seems to help keep our enemies away.
this year im thinking about playing recorded political campain speaches from obama and mccain. sure to drive anything away.
ill just have to shut it off when im out there working.

Conibears are a good method as well, if you want to kill the critter, just get one of the larger ones. You can catch your neighbors cat in it too...that will stop it from pooping in your patch.
