It's in book 1 page 72, dig hole 4'x4'x3' fill hole with fresh manure and leaves 2.5'deep cover with 6" top soil then prepare hill as you would ordinarily.

last year was my second year growing. i dug a big hole and filled it with manure. my biggest one was 388 lbs. i'm not sure if the heavy hitters dig holes or not. i'll bet if you ask on the general discussion page some of them will tell you. i'm kinda interested if they do. what would you reccomend reading oakiegal?

Giant Pumpkins II and DT2 (Dick's Tips 2) The first book you can get from Don Langevin's website, the other is through this site.

ammend you patch the same all over,,,make a little mount where you wonna plant it and grow. Once roots get to the boundries of a planting hole they incounter diffrent soil.

Hot beds were used in the old days. The composting fresh manure would produce heat warming the soil mound above it..

Do not dig pits or big holes at your planting site. You will risk creating a bowl that your roots will rot in if the water does'nt drain well, especially with clay soils.Do what the cooks said in their post and you should be fine.
